Turn roof area into squares, materials, labor and a marked-up price, then download the roofing estimate as a PDF.
Roofing is priced by the square — 100 square feet of roof surface. This calculator converts your measured area into squares, applies a waste factor, prices materials and labor at the rates you enter, adds your markup and produces a client-ready PDF. The rates are yours: roofing costs vary too much by region, material and pitch for any fixed number to be honest.
Measuring and waste
Measure the roof surface, not the house footprint — pitch adds area. If you only have the footprint and the pitch, a roof square footage calculator converts them to surface area. Add a waste allowance for cutting at hips, valleys and edges; simple gable roofs need less than complex roofs with many hips and valleys. Order shingles in bundles, usually three bundles per square for standard three-tab or architectural shingles, but check the manufacturer's coverage.
What else belongs in a roofing estimate
Tear-off and disposal, underlayment, ice and water shield where required, drip edge, starter strip, ridge cap, flashing, ventilation, and permit fees. Replacing damaged decking is usually priced per sheet as an allowance, because nobody knows how much is rotten until the old roof is off.
Frequently asked questions
How many squares is my roof?
Divide the roof surface area in square feet by 100. A 2,000 sq ft roof surface is 20 squares, before waste.
Why doesn't the calculator include prices?
Material and labor costs vary widely by region, material and roof complexity, and they change. Enter your own supplier and labor rates for an estimate you can stand behind.
