Contractor & Field for Small Business

Field work breaks office habits. Paper quotes get rained on, receipts fade on the dashboard, and the invoice gets written days after the job when nobody remembers the extra hour. The gear here is about capturing the job while you are still on site: rugged phone cases and mounts, portable printers, clipboards and document cases, and power for a long day away from an outlet.

The single biggest improvement for most trades is invoicing on the spot. A phone in a rugged case plus an invoice template means the customer sees the total before you leave, and payment terms are agreed face to face. Pair it with a portable printer if your customers still want paper.

Keep receipts for every material purchase — a phone photo the same day is enough — because those are deductible business expenses and the first thing an accountant asks for. A simple weekly routine of photographing receipts and logging mileage beats a shoebox every April.

What to look for when buying

• Pick a phone case rated for drops onto concrete, not just scratches.
• A 12V or USB-C power bank that can charge a phone twice covers most full days on site.
• Portable thermal printers need their own paper size — buy the rolls at the same time.
• A waterproof document case keeps permits, plans and signed quotes readable.
